Project finance modelling skills in other sectors

An extract from 'Finders Keepers' by Kate Walters, focussing on how culture and socio-professional networking can play a key role in the retention of quality staff.
Navigator Project Finance hired nine people last year and will reach 18-25 staff this year. For office staff, managing director Nick Crawley goes online to Seek, LinkedIn, or takes referrals from his team. But for sales staff, he goes to specialist recruiters. “Our analysts and ‘delivery’ staff generally find us and we can train them up, however ‘salesy’ people are a different breed so we go straight to somebody that does all the work for us.”
Crawley doesn’t poach. He prefers blank canvases, recruited from outside the banking industry. “We educate and create our own culture, which is the big part of the success of a boutique firm” he says. Crawley is a lucky man. He has a waiting list of job applicants. Even so, he works hard to keep his staff. Salaries are above average and the client-facing team share 25 per cent of the company’s profits. Sales commissions are high. His top tip, however, is to “allow” staff to enjoy work.
